Test content
The BMAT is a two-hour admission test that assesses a combination of aptitude and knowledge. The BMAT tests a wide range of skills across three sections:
- Section 1 tests Your skills in problem solving, understanding arguments, analyzing data and reasoning. You will answer 32 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes.
- Section 2 examines Your ability to apply scientific knowledge normally covered in school science and mathematics by age 16. You'll answer 27 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes.
- Section 3 evaluates Your ability to select, develop, organize, and communicate ideas concisely and effectively in writing. You will produce an essay on one of three questions of your choice, and you will get 30 minutes to do this.
The BMAT is a difficult test because you can't use a calculator or a dictionary, there is a lot of time pressure, and it tests such a wide range of skills. Many scientifically minded students in particular view the essay writing component with trepidation.
BMAT scores
For Sections I and II, you will receive a score (to one decimal place) on a nine-point BMAT scale.
The third section is scored completely differently: the quality of your content will be scored on a scale of one to five, and the quality of your English will be scored on a scale of A to E.
BMAT scores are more important than ever. The combination of increasing numbers of medical applicants with competitive grades, and the ongoing inflation of the A grade, means that a high grade is one of the few ways you can really stand out as a candidate.
Moreover, your scores are really important to ensure that you get invited to medical school interviews. Universities will either specify a cut-off score you need to overcome, rank candidates by score, or use it in conjunction with Personal statement When selecting candidates.
How can I prepare for the BMAT?
We recommend that the best BMAT preparation includes:
- Learn the right strategies, for example by joining an online BMAT course
- Practice questions
- Obtaining individual education through private lessons, for example.
