How can trade and trade policy address an aspect of the climate crisis in your country? Each participant must identify a specific issue relevant to the competition topic.

For more than 50 years, the Commonwealth Youth Program (CYP) has prioritized youth empowerment, understanding that this is a prerequisite for inclusive development and economic progress. The 2024 Commonwealth Essay Competition aims to encourage young people in the Commonwealth to explore the link between trade and climate change and suggest ways in which trade policies can contribute to solving the climate crisis.

In this competition, entries will be evaluated based on the quality of the writing, its compatibility with international trade policy frameworks, the uniqueness of the problems posed and the solutions proposed, and other factors.

A panel of the Commerce and Youth Team will review the essays, entries will be evaluated by an esteemed panel, and the entrants with the best three essays will receive valuable prizes. First prize will be £1000, while second and third place will receive £500 each.

This international essay competition supports the goals of resilience, climate adaptation, and youth-led entrepreneurship, all of which are aligned with the Year of Youth. The winning articles will be published as part of a series of reports on business competitiveness, and launched at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa in October. Seize this wonderful opportunity to raise your voice and contribute to shaping a sustainable future.
