Chevening Scholarship Program 2025

The Chevening Scholarship Program is the UK Government's international awards program which aims to develop global leaders. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations.

Chevening offers two types of awards – Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships – recipients of which are personally selected by British embassies and high commissions around the world.

The Chevening Scholarship is a fully funded scholarship worth over £18000. This is the place that many students are looking for. 

The scholarship takes care of the following expenses for the lucky winner;

  • Tuition fees, living costs, travel costs and visa costs
  • Contribute to health tests such as TB testing when required

The duration of the Chevening opportunity is one full year and is renewable for students who already enjoy the package.

Chevening Scholarship Conditions

Students eligible to apply for the Chevening Scholarship Program are:

  • Citizens of countries who have agreements with the scholarship program
  • Return to the country of citizenship for a period of not less than two years after the end of study
  • Have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to enter a postgraduate program at a UK university. 
  • This is usually equivalent to a 2:1 second class honors degree in the UK.
  • It is possible to apply in any study major previously specified by the scholarship at the university
  • The age of the applicant must not exceed what the donor agency previously specified (see the section on applying for the scholarship).
  • You must have a previous degree in accordance with the requirements of the Chevening Scholarship programme
  • Send the application fully supported by the required documents and facts
  • Delay in sending the application or lack of documents will cause your application to be rejected
  • You must meet all conditions and admission criteria at the institution (university).
  • Complete the scholarship application completely within the specified dates
  • The requirement to obtain a recognized academic qualification.
  • You have the right drive and motivation to apply
  • You must be of nationality eligible to apply for a Chevening scholarship
  • To obtain unconditional acceptance from one of these universities
  • There is no specific age requirement
  • You must have at least two years of work experience.
  • To return to your country of origin for at least two years after the end of the scholarship

2/5 - Motivation questions

In this section, you are asked to answer a series of short essay questions on the following areas: leadership and influence; Building relationships and shared learning; Study in the UK and your long-term career goals.

As you know, Chevening is the UK government's international awards program which aims to develop global leaders. This section allows you to provide examples of your leadership skills and potential, and describe how you will use your time in the UK to develop professionally and academically, build professional networks, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK.

Please use examples to support your answers. All answers must be no less than 100 words and no more than 500 words.

All answers must be written in English. Applicants must not repeat answers to any of the essay questions, and must enter new and original answers to each of the four questions. Please do not copy and paste the same answers into more than one box as this will render the application invalid.

You must write:

  • Mission * Leadership and influence
  • A message of relationship building and shared learning
  • A message why you want to study in Britain
  • Message your complete career plan for the future.

3/5 – Application information

In the Application Information section you will need to complete details about your intended university course choices, and your UK immigration status.

If you need to research further, you can return to this section later but you must complete this before submitting your application.

Please note that there are no English language requirements for the Chevening programme. However, you will need to meet the English language requirements set by the universities you are applying to.

4/5 - Terms and conditions

The aim of Chevening is to support the UK's foreign policy priorities and create lasting positive relationships with future leaders, influencers and decision-makers. All awardees are required to confirm that they will adhere to Chevening's terms and conditions.

Translation of documents must be done by a certified translator and must always accompany the original documents as well.

Tips on applying for a Chevening Scholarship

English language requirements

In order to receive a Chevening Scholarship, all applicants must demonstrate that they have met the Chevening English language requirements. We advise all applicants to ensure they meet the English language requirements as soon as possible by:

  • Take an English language test

If you fail to prove that you have met the required level of English or fail to prove that you are eligible for an exemption, your application will not be successful.

English language tests

You are free to take the tests more than once in order to meet Chevening's English language requirements. Please note that Chevening does not pay the costs associated with the English language test. You are responsible for booking and paying the costs associated with these tests.

Chevening accepts English tests from five providers:

  • Academic IELTS
  • Pearson PTE Academic
  • TOEFL iBT test
  • C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge English: Advanced [CAE])
  • Trinity ISE II (B2)

If you do not already have a current qualifying test certificate, it is your responsibility to ensure that you have booked a test appointment so that you can obtain the required results.

Applicants are not permitted to take pre-sessional courses to fulfill Chevening English language requirements. You will be required to take one of the approved English language tests unless you fall into one of the exempt categories.

Applicants are not permitted to enroll in foundation courses to fulfill their university's English language requirements or any other conditions of a university offer. Any offer from a university that requires enrollment on a foundation course will be considered conditional.

In some countries, the availability of testing centers is limited, so we recommend that you organize a test at the earliest opportunity. 1- Can I extend my application?

no. Extensions will not be granted under any circumstances.

2- Do I have to fill out the forms and send them to you via email?

Yes. Please send completed copies of the Admissions Form, Data Preferences Form, Medical Form and Client Care Letter, making sure to include all relevant pages and send each form as a PDF document (please do not send individual pages).

3- Can I use an electronic signature?

Manual signature is preferred. However, if you are unable to print and scan documents to your computer, we will accept an electronic signature.

4- When will I receive my final award letter?

Your FAL will be issued after you have submitted all necessary documents and after we have received confirmation of your course details directly from the University. Your FAL will then be processed by our international team who will send it to your Embassy/High Commission for confirmation. Please be patient while you wait as there are a large number of scientists being processed by our teams at this time.
