DAAD scholarship for doctoral and research studies in the best German universities
The DAAD Doctoral Scholarship aims to support qualified young academics and scientists who have completed a master’s degree, diploma, or bachelor’s degree at the latest, by providing full financial support starting from one to four years.
Under certain circumstances, some students may receive additional benefits in the DAAD Doctoral Scholarship if the study program extends for more than six months.

DAAD PhD Scholarship Conditions
- Proof of linguistic abilities according to the program’s language of instruction, English or German.
- When submitting your application, you must provide evidence of your current proficiency in the language of instruction (German or English) in your chosen study programme.
- Master's degree or diploma, or in exceptional cases bachelor's degree.
- Additional knowledge and skills (e.g. through professional or voluntary activities.
- Applicants must not have graduated more than six years before the application deadline. If you are already working on a PhD, you must not have started your degree more than three years before.
- Applicants who have resided in Germany for more than 15 months at the application deadline cannot be considered.
Steps that will make it easier for you to apply for the DAAD PhD scholarship

- Request references
- The form, which must be filled out by the referee, must be created in the DAAD portal in the “Application Reference” section after registration and downloading.
- Please send the form by email to your reference and ask that the completed reference form be returned to you in a sealed envelope. In each case, please provide your reference with the application address thus enabling her to send the letter of recommendation there directly.
- Apply online at DAAD portal.
- Download and complete the online application form
- Preparing application documents
- If necessary, translate the documents (unless they are already in German or English).
- Scan paper documents (except references) and save them in PDF format. Please note that you can only upload PDF files to the portal.
- Upload the completed application form and other application documents to the online portal in PDF format. Translations, if any, must be uploaded with the document issued in the original language.
- Submit your uploaded application documents online.
Please note that a form to fill out the judgment can only be generated during the application period (from approximately 6 weeks before the application deadline).
Please create one form for each provision. The reference is confidential and the applicant may not view it!

References must be sent in an unopened envelope to the application site. - Please remember to specify the exact contents of your postal shipment in the documents for customs authorities, for example “Application for scholarship with application documents, reference and DVD with work samples (no trade goods, no value of goods, no insurable value)”.
