The International Mathematics Program from the Abel Visiting Scholar Foundation is dedicated to creative people in the field of mathematics and invites participants to visit Germany at the Foundation’s headquarters For one month only. 

For visits longer than one month, applicants must provide proof of financial support from the host institution to cover living expenses after the first month.

The host institution (by which we mean a German university, for example), and the maximum stay in this case is only one year.

International Mathematics Program Funding

The program can only cover one month, with the value of the grant reaching 4 euros distributed as follows:

  1. Airfare costs to Germany.
  2. visa fees
  3. Travel insurance fees
  4. Basic cost of living
  5. The cost of accommodation is a maximum of 4 weeks.

The scholarship beneficiary must retain all invoices for travel, visa, insurance, accommodation, up to four taxi receipts, and all boarding tickets and send them directly to the Foundation to receive payments.

The scholarship pays the costs of the International Mathematics Programme in two batches:

  • Down payment for accommodation in Germany, travel insurance, visa, transportation to the airport and 50% of the cost of living before departure.
  • The second payment is for the remaining living costs after the visit.
  • To receive the second batch, the report, photos, and all invoices must be sent to the Union Secretariat before the start of the second batch.

Financial report, activity, photos and all invoices must be sent to the organization before the start of the second batch.

  • Please note that an overview of expenses must be included in the financial report and must be accompanied by the original invoices and boarding passes.
  • The financial report and activity report should be sent to the institution, two weeks after the end of the research visit.

Conditions for registration in the international mathematics program

  • Be in the early stages of their career
  • The applicant's age must be less than 35 years.

  • The applicant must have already initiated a research contact with a partner at a German institution and shared the proposed international research with them.
  • An official invitation from the international research partner institution
  • A copy of your master’s or doctoral degree
  • Statement of current employment status
  • A photo of the applicant

Applications not completed by the deadline may not be considered for evaluation. Applicants are required to submit their application at least two weeks in advance.

Deadlines for registration in the International Mathematics Program

Applications must be received at least four months prior to the desired start date. The selection committee will review applications and award the scholarship every four months. The result is announced on the Abel Visiting Scholar recipients page.

The following deadlines apply:

  • August 31 for visits between January 1 and April 30
  • December 31 for visits between May 1 and August 31
  • April 30 for visits between September 1 and December 31
