Bearing the name of Mikhail Lomonosov is one of the oldest and largest Russian universities. It is considered one of the centers of national science and culture. It was named in honor of Mikhail Vasilievich Lomonosov in 1940.

Moscow State University includes 15 scientific research institutes, 40 faculties and more than 300 teaching staff. The university has 6 branches including five abroad – all in the CIS countries.

About 35000 students study at the university at the undergraduate, postgraduate and specialization levels, 5000 postgraduate students, candidates and doctoral holders, and 10000 students in preparatory colleges, for a total of about 50000 students. 4000 professors and teachers and 5000 researchers also study in colleges and research centers.

Founding of Moscow University in 1755

The establishment of the university was proposed by Professors Ivan Shuvalovim and Mikhail Lomonosov. The decree establishing the university was signed by Empress Elizaveta Petrovna on January 23, 1755. On the anniversary of the signing of the decree, the memory of Saint Tatiana is celebrated every year at the university - January 12 according to the Julian calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, on January 25, the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the first lectures were given at the university on April 26, 1755, and Sharif Shuvalov became the first rector of the university, and Alexei Argamakov (1711-1757) became its first director.

Main building of Moscow State University

The central part (Section “A”) consists of 36 floors, and contains the Deanship of the University, General University Services, the Youth Council, the Faculties of Mechanics and Mathematics, Geography, the Faculty of Geology, the Earth Sciences Museum, classrooms, laboratories, libraries and restaurants.

From the central part there are 18 floors for student housing (boarding halls) (buildings “B” and “F”), with towers reaching the 24th floor. From these sections, on the other hand, the 9-storey sections C, D, Y, and F branch out - and are occupied by the boarding houses. As well as hotels, and adjacent to the main building are the towers (“A”, “K”, “L”, “M”) where the professors’ and teachers’ apartments are located.
