Anyone who has discovered a passion for horses will sooner or later think about pursuing a career in dressage and horse riding in Germany.

A riding instructor combines theory and practical knowledge, he can judge the behavior of horses and also evaluate his students' riding abilities.

Horse riding instructor as a professional exercise

The German Equestrian Federation organizes the training of riding instructors. There are regulations for training and examinations for this purpose.

The conditions for becoming a horse trainer in Germany are as follows:

  • Your membership in the equestrian club, or
  • Prove that you will join the membership in the future through a specific letter addressed to the equestrian club.
  • Guide to first aid course.

Participation in a preparatory course may also be required as an admission criterion, and depending on the level of training, acceptance and training as a trainer may also be required. A police clearance certificate (no judge) is often required.

The path to becoming a horse riding instructor in Germany

  • By obtaining previous training as a manager of horse centers.
  • By obtaining a general trainer license in a private school.

In addition, of course, certain personal characteristics must be given to the person applying for the job or training, including patience, powers of observation, and enjoyment of teaching a diverse group of riding students, whether you are a beginner or advanced in your experience with horses.

This includes necessary empathy. The love of horses must be intuitive to the applicant. Horse riding instructors must be able to recognize dangerous situations at an early stage and evaluate the learning progress of students.

Important: To be a good horse riding instructor, it is not enough to be able to ride well yourself. You also have to be able to transfer this knowledge, and always according to the level of the person you are going to teach.

Riding instructors can work in riding stables, riding clubs, or riding schools.

Important: No wage will be paid for the duration of the training. There may be additional costs, for example in the form of examination fees.

Meaning that the school in which you will do vocational training will not, in any case, give you wages for what you provide during your education period.

Duration of Espeldung horse riding instructor

In order to gain knowledge for the job of riding instructor, you can complete a three-year apprenticeship as a riding instructor.

However, there is also the possibility of completing courses lasting several weeks instead of a three-year apprenticeship in order to train as a riding instructor.

The certificate you will receive

While training to become a horse riding instructor, you have to go through different levels and obtain training certificates. The goal is to build levels on each other and constantly improve skills as a riding instructor.

  • Entry Level Beginner- Trainer C
  • Advanced level – Trainer B
  • Top level – Trainer A

Trainer license courses are offered regularly by the German Equestrian Federation. The course lasts 3 weeks and consists of 120 performance units, each lasting 45 minutes.

Coach C

Coach C training is the first level of training. It includes basic training, introduction to tournament and competitive sports.

The coach means the student can also choose his or her own areas of focus. You can train as a C coach for basic sports or a C coach for competitive sports.

Both specializations can be chosen. In order to be able to start with a C trainer license at all, you must obtain membership in an equestrian sports club.

In addition, applicants must be at least 18 years old and be able to provide a police clearance certificate and proof of first aid course.

Coach B

After successfully passing the “C” course, Trainer “B” comes to the next level.

This is where Coach C's knowledge is built. The abilities, skills and knowledge acquired thus far are deepened, either generally or in your chosen area of focus.

Coach A

Finally, Instructor A constitutes the third level of licensure. It builds on the skills, abilities and knowledge acquired at the first two levels of licensure. Here the potential trainer learns, among other things, how appropriate teaching and training concepts can be created, or how training and training offers can be developed, controlled and designed.

Tip: Instructor licenses can be obtained in different fields, for example endurance riding, jumping or driving.

Within each level there is also a further division into basic and competitive sports.

Did you know that in Germany you can work as a horse dressage coach or horse riding coach independently without the need to undergo any professional training? But here there is no trust in a person who has mastered the profession by inheritance, rather than in a person who has mastered the profession in a practical and scientific manner.

How comfortable you ultimately feel with a riding instructor rather than someone who learned it from someone else without a scientific principle, whether you have a feeling that he meets your needs as a riding student and at the same time has a good connection with his horses, every riding student should find out. By himself in a personal meeting or trial lesson.
