The Switzerland Summer Internship Scholarship Program provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to gain their first research experience in a field of their choice. The scholarship offered by the Department of Computer Science at ETH takes place over two summer months and is open to all students around the world.

Financing summer training in Switzerland

The amount provided covers housing and living costs. Travel and visa expenses will also be covered. Students can claim travel costs against vouchers at the beginning of the programme.

Program structure

The main part of the Student Summer Research Fellowship program at ETH Zurich is dedicated to conducting research in one of the available fields.

  • Time frame: July 1 - August 31. Please note that the time and duration of the fellowship are set to cover two full months in July and August.
  • Eligibility. Bachelor's and Master's students around the world with
    Expected graduation date at the earliest during the spring semester of the year following the two-month fellowship.
  • Research experience. Fellows will pursue a research project aligned with their chosen area of ​​interest as part of a research group in our department. This includes interacting and collaborating with group members.
  • Communication and social networking. A number of on-site socializing events will help fellows get to know people from outside their research groups, including current ETH students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • a wage. Fellows at ETH Zurich will receive a monthly allowance of approximately 1.750 Swiss francs to cover housing and living expenses. • Travel and visa expenses will be covered as well. Students can claim travel costs against vouchers at the beginning of the programme.
  • Accommodation. Affordable housing will be organized during the research stay, once the candidate is accepted into the programme. We will also provide information regarding visa applications (where applicable).
  • Switzerland. Fellows have the opportunity to explore Zurich's vibrant culture in the summer as well as Switzerland's beautiful mountainous landscape in their free time.

Registration terms

You are eligible for the ETH Student Summer Research Fellowship Program if you meet the following conditions:

  • You are enrolled in a study program (Bachelor or Master) in Computer Science or a closely related field
  • The expected graduation date for your current program of study (Bachelor's or Master's) is the year following the fellowship or later
  • You will have completed two years of study by the start of the program (Master’s students normally meet this requirement)
  • The duration of the fellowship is two full months in July and August, during which time you must be present
  • Due to current COVID-19 safety measures, travel restrictions, and quarantine rules, participants must present a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate with an approved vaccine or proof of recovery at the beginning of the program.

Language requirements:
The program is conducted exclusively in English. Although there is no formal proof of language proficiency, the fellowship requires a good working knowledge of English and can be assessed at an interview.

Admission process:
Your application will be evaluated on the basis of the documents submitted. The final step in the application process may include an interview conducted with shortlisted candidates.

How flexible is the program when it comes to start date?

The program begins on July 1st and ends on August 31st.
This means that the duration of the fellowship covers two full months in July and August.
Unfortunately, there is no flexibility for logistical reasons.

I am currently in the middle of my studies; Am I eligible to apply?

Yes, because you only graduate the year following the fellowship.

I am currently a final year bachelor's student; Am I eligible to apply?

Unfortunately no.
The program is designed to provide research experience to students during their studies.
If you have only finished the year following the summer of the fellowship, you are eligible to apply.

Do I need to be a citizen of a particular country to be eligible to apply?

No, this program is open to students of all nationalities.

Will the selection process be biased towards students with more experience?

No, we evaluate each application individually.

If possible, do I have to obtain the appropriate visa to participate in the program?

Yes, it is your responsibility to obtain the necessary visa.
The ETH Student Exchange Office will assist fellows in this process. Visa expenses will be covered.

Do I need to organize housing myself?

No, accommodation will be organized. We intend to find accommodation for all fellows in the same student house.
Housing expenses will be deducted from the scholarship.

What kind of experience should students have before applying for the program?

No, we welcome students with a variety of experiences and look forward to learning more about them.
