Basics and basic terms
Grammar is a theory of language. It's like a construction kit, its individual elements are labeled.
The word grammar originally comes from Greek. Gramma (γράμα) means “writing or letter”. Today we understand that grammar is the set of rules for the structure of a language. If you are not sure whether you have made a mistake, you can ask your German teacher or your friends: “Is this grammatically correct?”
The German language belongs to the Germanic language family. Other major Germanic languages are English, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic, and Dutch. The German language has very difficult rules for forming sentences, for example the position of the verb changes depending on whether it is a subordinate clause or a main clause. It's the same in Dutch, for example. There are also a relatively large number of word forms in the German language.
Anyone who has been learning German for a long time knows what I'm talking about. It's a bit like mathematics – the endings of adjectives or nouns can depend on several factors: gender + case + number = noun ending + correct article.
You don't have to worry. Learning German is not as difficult as it seems at first. If you have the right learning system, learning German will be fun!
