EMBO Fellowships are offered to outstanding postdoctoral researchers from different regions of the world, with support lasting up to two years. International relocation is central to this program. The fellowship includes financial coverage, as well as a stipend or financial compensation for transportation, and provides support for fellows who are accompanied by children.

Winners are also given the opportunity to attend a leadership course in EMBO Laboratories, in addition to joining the global network of EMBO Fellows.

Five additional postdoctoral fellowships are allocated to researchers who apply to work in one of the following countries: Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia, and Turkey. In addition, the program now guarantees an interview with an EMBO member or young researcher for fellowship applicants in those countries, provided they pass the initial stage of quality assessment.

EMBO considers a first peer-reviewed publication to be an indicator of eligibility and competence for a postdoctoral fellowship program.

Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications and documents via the electronic application system, and only complete and fulfilling applications will be considered. Applications are evaluated in two evaluation rounds during the spring and fall, the results of which are subsequently announced.

The fellowship provides stipends and financial benefits, as well as training opportunities and local and international academic networking. This fellowship represents a golden opportunity for researchers to expand their knowledge and make important contributions to their fields by working in advanced and supportive academic environments.

Benefits of Postdoctoral Fellowships

EMBO provides grants to host institutions in EMBC member countries to enable them to issue employment contracts to fellows joining the EMBO Fellowship Programme. For colleagues working in non-EMBC member countries, a stipend will be provided.

Please consider:
These changes affect applicants who participate in the first assessment rounds from 2020 onwards. Previous evaluated applicants and current EMBO Long-Term Fellows will continue to receive a stipend.

Fellowship Duration:
EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded for two years, however application may be made for shorter periods. The minimum duration of the fellowship that can be requested is set at least one year. It is necessary for the fellowship to begin within one calendar year following the application deadline date.

Items offered:
Under this fellowship, an employment contract is provided as well as other benefits such as childcare allowance, travel and relocation allowance, joining the EMBO Fellows network and attending leadership courses in the EMBO laboratory. In addition, fellows from non-EMBC member countries receive a stipend for two years, unless a shorter period (at least one year) is requested. These benefits should follow the same approach as for colleagues from EMBC member countries.

The stipend is focused on covering the costs of living in the host country, and is not applicable to substitute fees, overhead expenses, resources for consumables, or any other financial benefits related to the host supervisor or host organization. The value of the stipend depends on the host country and may be subject to taxes.

EMBO does not provide tax advice, and colleagues are advised to contact the tax authorities in the country concerned.

  • Candidates are allowed to submit only one application for one project in one host laboratory in each selection round.
  • You can only resubmit once.
  • Exceptions to the eligibility rules are for applicants facing unusual personal circumstances on a case-by-case basis, and exceptions include circumstances such as paternity leave, serious illness, or military service during the relevant period. You must contact the Fellowship Office prior to submitting your application for more information regarding exceptions.
  • Applications that meet the eligibility criteria are not eligible unless prior approval from the Fellowship Office.

Fellowship Application:

Applications and supporting documents (references, acceptance of the host institute) are received via the online application system only. Only applications that are fully complete will be considered.

Please read the FAQs carefully and follow the EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships guidelines before submitting an application.

The reference date for eligibility and assessment is the date on which candidates confirm that their application is complete, according to Central European (Summer) Time (CE(S)T).

Postdoctoral fellowship applications are received throughout the year and are placed in one of two evaluation rounds depending on the time of submission.

  • Spring Evaluation Round: Includes all eligible applications submitted by the second Friday of February, 14:00 CET. The results of this round will be announced at the end of May or beginning of June.
  • Autumn Evaluation Round: Includes all eligible applications submitted by the second Friday of August, 14:00 CEST. The results of this round will be announced at the end of November or beginning of December.

please note:
Registering for an online EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowship application account is not sufficient to participate in the evaluation round. The application is considered complete only when all required information is provided and the candidate confirms its completion.
