The African Development Bank’s Japan-Africa Dream Grant is a capacity building programme offered by the African Development Bank and the Government of Japan. The programme aims to strengthen human resource capacity in Africa, in line with the Bank’s five strategic priorities, namely:

African Development Bank Scholarship Features

The scholarship offers an opportunity for outstanding African students to obtain a two-year scholarship to pursue postgraduate studies at master’s level in the fields of energy, agriculture, health, environmental sustainability, and engineering.

The Japan-Africa Dream Scholarship is open to applicants from regional member states of the African Development Bank, who possess relevant educational and professional experience, and a record of supporting development efforts in their country.

Upon completion of their studies, scholars are expected to return to their countries to contribute to social and economic development at national and continental levels using their newly acquired knowledge and skills.

  • Tuition fees are covered for the duration of the study program, 24 months.
  • A monthly stipend to cover living costs for the duration of the study program
  • Airline tickets from the home country to the host university at the beginning of the study program and back to the home country at the end of the scholarship period.
  • Health insurance, usually obtained through university.
  • An additional period of up to six (6) months for advanced preparatory study or practical training after graduation.
  • For students who participate in research, a special grant may be available to support research and dissertation preparation.
  • The scholarship includes coverage for computer learning, preparatory language or other similar courses.

The scholarship does not cover:

  • Costs of bringing or supporting the student’s family members.
  • Courses or training not included within the academic program.
  • Language learning courses that are not provided by the study programme.
  • Expenses related to additional educational materials, field trips, participation in workshops/seminars, or educational equipment such as computers.

Conditions for registration in the African Development Bank scholarship

  1. Nationality: The applicant must be from one of the member countries of the African Development Bank.
  2. Education: Obtain a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  3. Professional Experience: It is preferable that the applicant has professional experience that supports development in his country.
  4. Commitment to return: Commitment to return to the country of origin after completing studies to contribute to local development.

Paperwork

  1. Application form: Fill out the scholarship application form.
  2. Academic certificates: A copy of the university degree and transcript.
  3. CV: outlining professional experience and academic achievements.
  4. Letter of recommendation: from professors or professional supervisors.
  5. Study plan: Explains the purpose of the study and how the knowledge gained will be used to support development in the home country.
  6. Passport: A copy of a valid passport.
