The Siena Art Institute's Summer Residency Program gives professional artists and writers the opportunity to stay for a month in the beautiful, historic city of Siena, in the heart of Tuscany, Italy.  

This month-long summer residency program gives resident artists studio space at the Siena Art Institute and a private one-bedroom apartment in Siena's historic city center, as well as flight reimbursement to and from Italy. Summer residents are given uninterrupted time to pursue their independent projects, as well as the opportunity to explore the Siena region and interact with the local community.   

Please note that the application deadline is midnight in Italy on 30 September. The Residency Selection Committee will wait until after the September 30 deadline to review all applications received and make their selection decisions.

About the institution

Siena Art Institute Onlus is a small non-profit art organization based in the heart of Siena, Italy. The school offers a unique study abroad experience for undergraduate or graduate students in the arts and writing. It also hosts intensive summer courses, arts programs, residencies, project grants, and a visiting artist program. The Siena Institute of the Arts in Onlos opened in 2011, and its program grew out of that of the Siena School of Liberal Arts, which has run the arts and humanities at Siena since 2004.

Advantages of summer training in Italy

  • In return, Artists in Residence are asked to give something back to the Siena Art Institute in several ways:
  • When you arrive in Siena, talk generally about their work.
  • Connect with program participants through a regular activity such as an afternoon master class or review of student work.
  • Although not required, Artists in Residence are also invited to:
  • Give one or more shows at a gallery or studio during their stay.
  • Lead workshops with Siena Art Institute Summer Program participants or local community members.

Conditions for summer training in Italy

  • In return, resident artists are asked to give back to the Siena Art Institute in several ways: 
  • – Giving a general talk about their work upon their arrival in Siena.
  • -Interact with our program participants through a structured activity, such as an afternoon master class or critiques of student work.
  • While not required, resident artists are also invited to:
  • -Keep one or more studios/galleries/performances/performances open during their stay.  
  • – Lead workshops with Siena Art Institute Summer Program participants or local community members.

Italy visas for participants

  • If you are a US citizen, you do not need a visa to study or travel in Italy for less than 90 days. If you plan to stay in Italy for longer than 90 days, you will need to obtain a visa from your Italian consulate.
  • If you are from a country other than the United States, please check with your local consulate for information on whether or not you will need a visa for your time in Siena. If you are offered accommodation at the Siena Art Institute and require a visa to enter Italy from your country of residence, we will be happy to provide a letter or similar form of documentation for your upcoming residence for use in the visa application procedure.
