The Indian Council for Cultural Relations Scholarships provides scholarship under the General Scholarship Scheme. The Council announced the possibility of students from all over the world and eligible nationalities to register directly via the Internet.

About Indian Council Scholarships

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) was founded in 1950 by India's first independent education minister. Its objectives are to actively participate in the formulation and implementation of policies and programs relating to India's external cultural relations; To nurture and strengthen cultural relations and mutual understanding between India and other countries; To promote cultural exchanges with other countries and peoples; And to develop relations with countries.

Indian ICCR Scholarships Requirements

ICCR Scholarship Funding India

  • Study expenses for undergraduate students will be borne in the amount of 18000 in Indian local currency
  • Study expenses for master’s students will be borne in the amount of 20000 in Indian local currency
  • Study expenses for doctoral students shall be borne in the amount of 22000 in Indian local currency
  • Study expenses for fellowship students shall be borne in the amount of 25000 in Indian local currency
  • Bear monthly rental expenses of 5500 to 6500 in local currency
  • Payment per semester for undergraduate students of 5000 in local currency
  • Payment per semester for master’s students of 7000 in local currency
  • Payment per semester for doctoral students of 12500 in local currency

Important instructions

Upon receipt of travel plans for selected students, it is necessary to make legal arrangements to pick up the student from the train station or bus stop.

  1. A welcome kit is handed out upon arrival. The combination should contain address details, email and mobile number.

  4. To help students register with the Registration Office within 14 days.

Yes, it is advisable to carry some cash on arrival in India, which should be in a currency that can be exchanged for Indian Rupee. This will be useful so that you receive an advance stipend to cover any incidental expenses and joining the university.

Am I entitled to an air ticket with this scholarship?

Yes, it is sometimes possible to obtain flight tickets, but not always.

Is the degree awarded by the Indian university/institution recognised?

The university awards the degree. Before applying for a particular university, it is advisable to check the qualifications assessment department of your country to know the equivalency of the degree awarded in India vis-à-vis your country.

What are the academic requirements at the time of entry for an undergraduate course?

The student must have passed 12th standard to join the undergraduate course

Can I study dual courses while living in India?

Under the ICCR Scholarship Programme, you can pursue only one course for which you are accepted.

Can I come 2/3 months before my studies?

Students who want to come two or three months in advance to India can come at their expense, as ICCR starts bearing the expenses of students only when they join the university.

Do I need to be vaccinated?

Immunization requirements vary from country to country? Please check with your local authorities or Indian Mission for information about this.

Do I need a passport?

Yes, you must have a valid passport issued by the relevant authorities of your government

I am a student with a disability, can I apply for a scholarship?

Yes. In case of slight disability, you can apply. In case of significant disability where the presence of a caregiver/family member is required, the applicant/caregiver must finance their stay in India as ICCR does not have any payments for the stay of the caregiver/family member under this scholarship.

Can I work in India while studying?

No, you are not allowed to work in India while studying under the ICCR Scholarship.

Can I stay in India after the course ends?

No, you must leave India after receiving your temporary record/certificates before your residence permit expires.

Can I apply for a program other than those mentioned?

No, only recorded programs are shown.

Who should I contact in case of emergency?

You can contact the college authorities, the international student advisor if there is one in your university and the regional office of ICCR Scholarships India. Depending on the nature of the emergency if necessary, you may contact the local police in the city where you are studying and the Scholarship Officer at the ICCR headquarters in Delhi.

What if I fail the exams?

Your scholarship will be discontinued and you will have to study as a self-funded student. The scholarship will be revived if you clear all your accumulated examination papers in time. ICCR also has the right to cancel the scholarship if any student is found indulging in any malpractices/anti-social/criminal activities inside or outside the campus.

Where should I stay in a hostel or other type of accommodation?

Hostel accommodation is mandatory. Students will be admitted only to colleges/institutes that offer residential facilities.

Is medical treatment covered by this scholarship?

Yes. ICCR India Scholarships provides medical treatment as per the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) rules of the Government of India. Reimbursement is made only to the extent possible within CGHS rules even if the treatment is taken in private hospitals.

How do I get my scholarship benefits?

You will receive a three-month advance salary upon arrival. You must open your bank account at the nearest State Bank of India branch to receive further scholarship dues, because after the first three months, all payments will be transferred to the bank account only.

What are the procedures required upon arrival in India?

After completing the admission formalities, the student must ensure registration with the local Foreign Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within two weeks of his arrival in India. After registering with the FRRO, he/she must obtain a residence permit within 90 days. The student must also open his/her bank account within one month of arrival, so that his/her salary can be deposited in his/her bank only.

I would like to apply for Ph.D. a path. Is an interview required for admission?

It depends on the university in question. Some universities may conduct an interview before finally selecting the candidate, hence the applicant must be prepared for this.

Can I join after the last date/deadline to join my course?

Applicants can join the course preferably a day or two before the final date of joining. If a student is not able to join within one month, his/her admission will be considered cancelled.

Can I change my course/university if I am not able to keep up with studies?

Students are encouraged to complete the course once accepted. In case of any mid-semester discontinuation, the student will have to repay the entire amount spent on him/her by ICCR until the expenses are incurred on the student by ICCR.

Can I apply in any universities/institutions in India?

ICCR Scholarships are offered for studies in Indian State and Central Universities only. ICCR Scholarships are not offered to study in private Indian universities or Deemed universities. Therefore the applicant is advised not to apply for any university in India.
ICCR forwards applications sent by Indian Missions to Central and State Universities of India in different states, a list of which is available on the A2A ICCR Scholarship Portal/in the application form. ICCR does not send applications to any private and reputed universities in India.

What type of certificates/certificates are required to hold at the time of admission?

The applicant must carry the following documents in English and original for verification by the concerned university authorities.

What type of visa is required to study in India?

Applicants seeking admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses must apply for a “student visa”. Those seeking M.Phil admission. And Ph.D. Courses must apply for a “Research Visa”. Once admission has been confirmed, the applicant must apply for the correct category of visa for the courses listed above. If the incorrect visa is approved, the applicant may be returned to his/her country for the correct visa category.

How and when will I know if my application has been accepted or rejected?

Once the university verifies your eligibility and confirms your provisional admission, the Indian Mission in your country will receive a confirmation.

Can I choose the university/institution from my choices?

Yes, you can apply for three options. However, admission is subject to meeting the criteria of the respective university.

Does submitting an application guarantee my acceptance?

No, submitting an application is not a guarantee of your admission, as your admission is determined by the university concerned on the basis of your credentials and in accordance with their eligibility criteria. The Indian Mission and Indian Council Scholarships have no role in the admission process and confirmation of admission is non-transferable.

Can I make changes once I complete and submit my application?

No, it is not possible to make any changes once your application has finally been submitted. However, in case of any major discrepancy, Indian Council Scholarships in that country may send a letter to apply for a new application again only.

How do I submit my application online? Do I need a user ID and password to apply?

You must select the option “Student Registration” on the home page of the Indian Council Scholarship Portal. When you fill the fields at the time of registration, you will get a unique user ID and password to apply online. This user ID and password will be sent to you on your email. Using your user ID and password, you can access and fill the application form. Please fill out the application according to the instructions and click the “Save” button after filling out each page, then move to the next page. Once the process is completed, you can press the “Submit” button. When successfully submitted, you will receive a registration number that can be used as an additional reference.

I don't have an internet connection, how can I apply online?

If you are interested in applying for the ICCR scholarship but do not have an internet connection or access, you can go to the Indian Embassy and meet the Education Officer of the Embassy. Embassy officials will help you fill out the application.

Will my application be accepted in hard copy or by mail?

No, only online applications will be accepted.

Can I apply from anywhere other than my country?

Since applications must be filled out online, you can apply on the scholarship portal from anywhere other than your home country. 

How to Register for Indian ICCR Scholarships

  • All entries (except signature) on the application must be filled out correctly.
  • The application must be complete in all respects, with all required information and all necessary supporting documents, as set forth below:
    • A recent passport-sized photo no larger than 3.5 x 4.5 cm (25 KB) must be uploaded to the application form in the space provided, and the photo must be with a white background and without glasses.
    • Copies of all academic qualifications, certificates and transcripts, including those relating to the school leaving examination, must be uploaded.
    • A physical fitness certificate in the prescribed format.
    • Personal recommendations/testimonials from current school/university etc
    • Certified copies of the relevant pages of a valid passport of the candidate showing photograph, name, contact details, date of issue, expiry date and place of issue. Please ensure that your passport is valid for the duration of the course you are applying for.
    • At the time of uploading the required documents, please ensure that all the documents that are uploaded correctly in the selected module, such as the Educational Certificates module, should be uploaded only along with the Educational Certificates and not other documents such as passport copies, photographs, etc.
    • The applicant must hold original certificates/documents if accepted for verification by the concerned university/institute at the time of joining. This is a mandatory requirement otherwise the university/institute can cancel the admission and ICCR will not be responsible for the same.
    • In the case of engineering courses, you must have Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in your school exams.
    • Candidates are required to apply on the portal along with the following mandatory details of their personal/academic details. 
    • Passport number.
    • Proof of age (birth certificate/any unique government-issued ID indicating a clear date of birth)
    • Abstract details in case of doctoral candidates
